The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
